Since 2000, the European Union (EU) has engaged in over 120 Election Observation Missions (EOMs) in all continents around the world (with the exception of the OSCE region).
Through these EOMs, the EU assesses the extent to which an electoral process complies with international best practices, and also provides and finances electoral assistance in these countries.
The stated goals of these missions are the legitimisation of an electoral process, where appropriate, and the enhancement of public confidence in the electoral process to deter fraud, to strengthen respect for human rights, and to contribute to conflict resolution.
